The region has seen a resurgence of Islamist terrorist attacks since late last year.

A Pakistani intelligence officer was killed and seven members of his team were injured in an encounter with terrorists in Pakistan’s northwest on Tuesday, the country’s military said.

The region has seen a resurgence of Islamist terrorist attacks since late last year, including a deadly bombing of a mosque in the city of Peshawar that killed more than 100 people, mostly policemen.

Brigadier Mustafa Kamal Barki of the country’s premier intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was killed in an encounter in South Waziristan, a mountainous region adjacent to the border. Afghanistan and has long been a haven for Islamic militants.

The military’s media wing, Inter Services Public Relations Pakistan, said in a statement that there was a heavy exchange of fire with the terrorists and that two members of Barki’s team were in critical condition.

No group has claimed responsibility.

Most of the attacks in the region have been claimed by the Islamist militant group Tehrik-i-Taliban, which pledges a separate loyalty from the Taliban that rules neighboring Afghanistan. Its stated objective is to implement its own brand of Sharia law in the country.
