Heavy Rains, Snow Lash Jammu And Kashmir; Schools Closed

Srinagar: Rains continued in Jammu and Kashmir with fresh snowfall in the upper reaches of the valley, while the Met department has predicted more rain in the next 24 hours. Heavy rain and hailstorm lashed several areas of the Kashmir Valley including Kulgam and Kupwara since this morning. Heavy rain lashed Jammu region as well as parts of Ramban region, forcing the authorities to close schools in the district for today.

Officials of the Metrology Department in Srinagar said that “Rain, cloudy and cold weather is going to prevail in Jammu and Kashmir today. A significant correction is very likely from May 9″. While officials said “mainly clear weather” is expected on May 9, rain/thunderstorm at a few places in the afternoon or evening cannot be ruled out.

District Administration Anantnag has launched a massive rescue operation to rescue around twenty families stranded along with their livestock at Margan Top in Kokernag area, amid inclement weather conditions in the entire region. “A joint rescue operation involving Revenue, Police, Army, CRPF, Medical, ASH, SRTC was launched to respond to a distress call at Navkan near Margan Top,” officials said.

Ten people, including eight tourists, have been rescued from the old tunnel area at Qazigund in Kulgam district. Authorities have advised tourists visiting the Kashmir Valley to keep warm clothes and eatables ready as the weather in the Valley is constantly changing, especially in the higher reaches and major tourist spots.
