Heartbreak for Indians as New Zealand lead in rain-marred World Cup semifinals

India suffered the most defeat against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup. India dominated the World Cup league stage as they won seven of their nine league games and topped the points table. However, the Black Caps paved the way for their second straight ODI WC final during the semi-finals.

The match was played between the two sides at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester. The toss went in favor of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and he decided to bat first.

Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson scored half-centuries against a disciplined Indian bowling attack as New Zealand posted a total of 239 runs on the scoreboard.

New Zealand got their first hiccup in the third over itself as Jasprit Bumrah took his first wicket in the form of Martin Guptill. Henry Nicholls scored 28 off 51 and walked back to the pavilion along with Ravindra Jadeja.

From 69/2, Williamson and Taylor joined forces and stitched together what became a match-defining partnership.

Williamson played a brilliant innings of 67 runs while Taylor added 74 runs to the scoreboard. However, after the captain and Taylor, no batsman could score runs and the Kiwis could only manage 239/8 runs in 50 overs.

However the match had to be stopped with New Zealand 211/5 and did not resume before being pushed to reserve day. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took three wickets for India, while Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal took one wicket each.

Chasing 240, India got off to a poor start. The top order of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli failed on the big occasion as they returned to the pavilion after scoring just one run. The middle order also failed to show anything special.

Jadeja and MS Dhoni dashed the hopes. Jadeja played a brilliant innings of 77 while Dhoni took the measure. However, it was not enough to take India home as New Zealand won by 18 runs.
