‘He is the future savior of the Indian national team’: FC Goa coach praises Dheeraj Singh

FC Goa head coach Juan Ferrando praised the spirit and character of the team after Gaur registered their second win in as many matches on Saturday despite playing with numerical losses in the majority of the second half.

“I think the team played well in the first half. It was a good performance. We had chances. We were better at positional attack and positional defence. It was a difficult moment for the team after 1-1. In the beginning, the team was not over confident,” Ferrando said in a post-match press conference.

“After the red card, the team was in a very difficult moment. But he changed the score because of the spirit of the team, the character was very good. In this case, I was very happy for the players – not only in the (starting) line-up but also the substitutes, they supported the team a lot.

“After 2-1, the team focused a lot on defense, did a great job in defense and in the end, we got three points. I am very pleased with it.”

There is an atmosphere of excitement in the FC Goa camp after a thumping win over the Blues. Ferrando, however, felt there was a lot of room for improvement in the team, especially during the transition period.

“We need to improve the transition. Transition is very important in football. Since our style is to play attacking football, it is very important to control infections. Sometimes we make mistakes,” said the Spanish head coach.

“We make mistakes because we are not focused on the press immediately or when the second leg of the press is not good or not on time. These are problems. It is not that easy because at the highest level of football and even the champions These problems exist in teams in the league as well.”

In the game, Gaur once again conceded defeat from a set-piece situation. While one can point fingers about the legality of the free-kick given to Bengaluru, there can be no argument that Gaur could have handled the situation better, especially from the goalkeeping point of view.

However, Ferrando reaffirmed his faith in Dheeraj Singh and other members of his squad in the post-match press conference.

“Today, it was a difficult moment for Dheeraj, but we support him. I have 100% trust in him – Naveen (Kumar) and Hrithik (Tiwari) too. For me, I am not worried about endurance,” Ghaffar said.

“He is 21 years old. He is the future savior of the Indian national team. He will continue to get more opportunities and keep working.”
