‘He always does what is best for the team’: Former coach Shastri on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy skills

The BCCI on Wednesday took a major decision to introduce the concept of split captaincy in the Indian cricket set-up. Rohit Sharma, who was earlier given the charge of the T20I team, has been appointed as the new ODI captain, while Kohli is leading the Test side. This marks the end of the latter’s nearly five-year stint as limited overs captain.

Kohli took over the Test captaincy in 2015 following the shocking retirement of MS Dhoni from the longest format during the Australia tour. Later in 2017, Kohli took over as the captain in the limited overs format after the former captain decided to step down.

Meanwhile, the former India Head coach Ravi Shastri gave his opinion on the split captaincy. Speaking with The Week in an interview, he spoke about Rohit’s captaincy skills and the way he led the team.

“Rohit is not overwhelmed; He always does what is best for the team. “In football, he marshalls all the resources of the team,” Shastri told The Week in an interview.

The former head coach recalled his stint and highlighted how Rohit and Kohli Shastri grew into two all-format batsmen in the world, making him happy and proud.

“We are two people with the same mindset. We have a similar wavelength. In 2014, when I first came, there was only one big player – MS Dhoni. Who else was there? Who was the superstar material? Virat and probably Rohit Sharma in white-ball cricket.

“To see these two guys and to become great players in red and white-ball cricket, to have a great fast bowling attack, to beat Australia in their backyard – a lot has happened to this team. Tremendous,” said Shastri.
