Hayley Mathews replaces Stephanie Taylor as West Indies women’s captain

Stafanie Taylor captained the West Indies women’s team in 62 ODIs and 55 T20Is. She will also lead the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Women’s CPL.

Hayley Mathews replaced Stafanie Taylor as the captain of the West Indies women’s team on Saturday, June 25. Taylor was one of the best ever captains of the Caribbean team, having led her side in 62 ODIs and 55 T20Is. Taylor last captained West Indies in the 2022 edition of the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand.

As a captain, Taylor scored 2190 and 1484 runs in ODIs and T20 Internationals respectively with the help of two centuries. The women’s selection panel recommended a change in leadership, following which the final decision was taken at the Cricket West Indies Board of Directors meeting on Friday, June 24.

“The selection panel has reviewed the team, including the leadership. Following this review, the panel decided to recommend that Hayley Matthews take over the role as captain. Hayley made remarkable progress over the years while serving as vice-captain She is the current captain of the West Indies women’s team and her national team, Barbados,” said principal selector Ann Browne-John.

“She has matured as a player and is one of the leading players across the globe with a good understanding of the game. Considering the experience she has gained in both the roles, we are confident that she will step into the role of captain. This is the ideal time to keep,” the selector said.

“We believe that leading the team for seven years is a great achievement, to which Stephanie has given immense levels of commitment and energy. We believe Stephanie is a world-class performer, who is undoubtedly a great asset to the team.” Will continue to add tremendous value. Top all-rounder in the game,” said the selector.

Mathews has played 69 ODIs and 61 T20Is so far and is regarded as one of the best young all-rounders along with Amelia Kerr and Deepti Sharma.

Mathews will also captain Barbados Royals in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Taylor will lead the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the same tournament. Deandra Dottin is the captain of the third team, Trinbago Knight Riders.
