Defending champions England cruised into the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with a mammoth 10-wicket win over co-hosts USA at the Kensington Oval on Sunday.
England bundled out the USA for 115 runs in 19.4 overs thanks to a brilliant bowling performance highlighted by Adil Rashid’s brace of wickets and Chris Jordan’s late four-wicket haul, before skipper Jos Buttler led from the front with an unbeaten 83 runs knock to take his side over the line with 62 deliveries to spare.
Rashid’s scalps of USA skipper Aaron Jones and Nitish Kumar turned the tide of the game in England’s favour and the spinner was presented with the Player of the Match award for his efforts.
The 36-year-old expressed his delight with the performance in which they controlled the proceedings.
“We fought pretty well, and set the tone with the ball,” he began.
“We were pleased to restrict them to 115. It is always nice to come here and bowl,” the spinner continued.
He also lauded his side’s bowling attack, who kept it tight from the other end as well.
“It also helps when the bowlers are keeping it tight from the other end. With the wind you have to assess from which end you will bowl,” he continued.
“Sometimes you may get hit for four and sixes. Sometimes you pick wickets,” he elaborated.
Jordan, produced a hattrick to wrap up the US innings as he picked four scalps, all in the penultimate over. Rashid was full of praise for the seamer, who produced the good on the day.
“CJ is a match-winner, he has been doing it for a number of years. Big congrats to him,” the spinner said.
England chased down the total at break-neck speed with Buttler leading from the front with his swashbuckling innings that included six fours and seven sixers. Rashid affirmed the quality of the opener and said that his team would need to carry the fine touch forward in the business end of the tournament.
“He is a world-class player and a great performer. We need to carry that form into the semi-final,” the wily spinner concluded.
