Surya Havan was performed on Sunday after three decades at the ancient Martand Sun Temple located in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, priests from different cities of the country, local people and Kashmiri Pandits participated in this puja. Together they prayed for peace and prosperity in the valley.

Martand Mandir Oldest temple among the Sun Temples of India
The 8th century Martand temple is the oldest of the Sun temples of India and a symbol of invaluable ancient spiritual heritage. It was dedicated to Surya, the principal solar deity in Hinduism. According to the information, the Martand Sun Temple was built by Lalitaditya Muktapid in the eighth century AD, but several attempts were made to destroy it between 1389 and 1413.

The last time Havan was held in 1990
In the year 1990, the last Havan and Puja took place in this temple. Then the priest and the local people used to perform Surya Havan together. On Sunday, for the first time in 30 years, so many priests and Kashmiri Pandits performed Surya Havan together. During this he also recited Hanuman Chalisa. Its condition is dilapidated now, but once it was the pride of Kashmir.

Devotees said – there is peace in Kashmir
A devotee said that it is not true that there is any tension in Kashmir. There is peace here and people of all religions live happily together. Another devotee said that Martand Sun Temple is a very old temple. We have come here to attend the puja.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reiterated the government’s promises to protect and develop ancient sites of cultural and spiritual importance. He said that Jammu and Kashmir is rich and home to various cultural influences. This is the place of knowledge in the country.
