Haryana: Police on Monday arrested a man who allegedly threw his 18-month-old daughter into a canal. Fortunately, a ‘kanwariya’ saved the child. According to the police, the accused has been identified as Balkar Singh, a resident of Pehowa, who had thrown his daughter into a canal near Jyotisar on July 12. Another accused along with Singh has been arrested by the police.

Kanwariya saw Singh dropping the child in the Saraswati feeder of the Narwana branch canal and fled on a motorcycle. He jumped into the canal and saved the girl child, the police said, adding that the pilgrim handed her over to the in-charge of a ‘Kanwariya Kendra’ in Raogarh village, after which she was handed over to the police in Jyotisar.

Police said that she is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. Jyotisar Chowki in-charge Mahinder Singh said on Monday that Balkar Singh had two daughters from his second wife and wanted to throw them both away. After allegedly throwing his younger daughter into the canal, he called his wife, who had gone to Ludhiana, and told her what he had done. He allegedly asked her to tell people that they had given their daughter up for adoption.

He also allegedly threatened to kill her if she told the truth to anyone. Police said that the accused wanted to throw both the daughters but the elder daughter started crying and he fled. When his wife returned, she informed her father-in-law and other relatives about it, who approached the police, resulting in the arrest of both the accused. Both the accused were produced in the court, from where they were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
