HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) – A 1-year-old girl died after being accidentally left in a hot car all day, investigators say.

Representatives from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were called Thursday night at 8100 Barnes Ridge Lane in the Alif area of southwest Harris County.

Investigators said the family told them that the mother of three young children aged five, three and one-year-old took the two older children to a nearby day care to drop them off.

For some reason the 1-year-old girl remained in her seat.

Deputies said the mother returned home and went to pick up the other two children until Thursday afternoon, when they learned the youngest had never been released.

A day care worker accompanied her mother back to her home where the little girl was found in the back seat of the car.

The public representatives told that his body was lying on the ground. He was declared brought dead on the spot on Thursday night.

Deputies told ABC13 that the district attorney’s office will determine whether the mother will face charges immediately or if the case will go to a grand jury.

Texas leads the nation in hot car deaths.

New model cars have technology that could help prevent tragic accidents. When you turn off the car, some vehicles may display a warning reminding you to check the back seat.

Look in your vehicle’s settings for the “Rear Seat Reminder” option.

GPS apps like Waze also offer reminders as an option in Settings.

Here are three things parents can do to make sure they don’t forget a child sitting in the back seat:

  1. Put an item in the back seat – phone, wallet or jacket
  2. Front Seat Visual Reminder – Baby Toy, Pacifier
  3. Keep the vehicle locked in the house and keep the keys out of reach
