Happy Republic Day 2022: Know the history and importance of this important day

Happy Republic Day 2022: It was January 26, 1950 when India after gaining independence from colonial rule took a step forward and empowered itself with its own constitution. This year on January 26, the country will celebrate the 73rd year of being a Republic of India.

Republic Day: History

After India got independence on 15 August 1947, the country had no permanent constitution of its own. Two weeks later, on 29 August 1947, a proposal to appoint a Drafting Committee was presented.

The Drafting Committee headed by Dr. BR Ambedkar was entrusted with the task of drafting the Constitution of India. The first session of this committee was held on 9 December 1946, after which several rounds of sessions were held for two years to debate and discuss the draft constitution.

The last session of the Drafting Committee ended on 26 November 1949 and the Constitution was adopted on the same day. However, it came into effect two months later, on January 26, 1950.

The Drafting Committee initially consisted of 389 members but after the independence and partition of India, the number of members was reduced to 299.

Republic Day: Significance

While the Constitution of India was adopted on November 26, 1949, it came into force on January 26, 1950. This was done to commemorate the declaration of Purna Swaraj or complete independence by the Indian National Congress on 26 January 1930.

The Constitution of India has 395 articles which are divided into 22 parts and 8 schedules.
