Tabu needs no introduction. The versatile actress has already etched a special place in the hearts of millions of fans with her on-screen persona and impeccable fashion sense. On her 53rd birthday, let’s look back at her journey in the film industry spanning over three decades.
Tabu entered the glamour world as a child artist with Sagar Sarhadi’s film Bazaar in 1982. She also played Dev Anand’s daughter in the 1985 film Hum Naujawan. Her debut in a lead role came in 1991 with the Telugu movie Coolie No.1, co-starring Venkatesh, which turned into a blockbuster.
Following this hit movie, she entered the Hindi film industry with the 1994 romantic drama Pehla Pehla Pyar. Her career took a remarkable turn with Vijaypath, in which Tabu acted with Ajay Devgn.
The action drama turned out to be a massive success at the box office and Tabu also received her first Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for her role. Since then, she has never looked back and kept on delivering some of biggest hits.
The versatile actress has received many awards for different genres. She received the National Film Award for Best Actress twice: for the films Maachis and Chandni Bar.
Her Filmfare Awards include Best Actress (Critics) for Virasat, Hu Tu Tu, Astitva, Cheeni Kum and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 as well as Best Supporting Actress for Haider. She was also conferred with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 2011, for her immense contribution to the film industry.
Apart from her roles in south movies and Hindi films, Tabu has also worked in Hollywood projects like Life of Pi (2012) and The Namesake.
In 2024, she appeared in the female-led heist comedy Crew, co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon. The film was a major commercial success. She was also seen with Ajay Devgn in their tenth collaboration, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, which hit theatres on August 2. This was her latest release.
Tabu’s Best Songs
- Maiyya Yashoda: The beautiful song is from Tabu’s 1999 film Hum Saath Saath Hain. Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal and Kavita Krishnamurthy gave voice for the song. The devotional track also featured Karisma Kapoor, Sonali Bendre, Mohnish Behl and Neelam, among others.
- Chham Chham Bole Payal Piya: Sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Udit Narayan, the song is from Tabu’s 2002 movie Maa Tujhhe Salaam. It featured Tabu and Sunny Deol.
- Kore Kagaz Pe: This song shows Tabu, at a young age, co-starring with Rishi Kapoor, dancing in a sunny, bright region filled with scenic beauty. Alka Yagnik and Suresh Wadkar lent their voices for the 1994-released film Pehla Pehla Pyar.
- Aayiye Aapka Intezaar Tha: Sung by Kumar Sanu and Sadhana Sargam, this song features Tabu dressed as a dulhan and waiting for his prince charming played by Ajay Devgn. The song is from her first big hit Vijaypath, which was released in 1994.
Tabu’s Upcoming Projects
The versatile actress will be next seen in the Dune franchise prequel series Dune: Prophecy. She will play Sister Francesca in this prequel series to the 2021 film Dune. Based on Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s novel, this series will premiere on Jio Cinema in India this November.
