Happy Birthday Mohan Agashe: Five must-watch movies of Veterans

Mohan Agashe is a well-known name in Marathi and Hindi cinema. Before entering the world of films, he was a professor. He started his career with art-house films and later went on to work in commercial films. Winner of Padma Shri, Order of Merit, Goethe Medal and Sahitya Akademi Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, Agashe is MBBS and holds a PG degree in Psychiatry. Founder Director of Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health, he has worked extensively in the field of Clinical Psychology and Psychopharmacology. Today, on the occasion of his birthday, watch some of his films:

1. Value (2008)

Directed by Umesh Kulkarni, the black comedy also starred Atul Kulkarni, Bharti Achrekar, Veena Jamkar, Girish Kulkarni, Dilip Prabhawalkar, Nandu Madhav, Nirmati Sawant and Renuka Daftardar. The actors did justice to the characters they played and Saand makes the audience fall in love with genuine and true humour. The film was well received by the audience and was even presented at several international film festivals.

2. Sinhasan (1979)

Dr Jabbar Patel’s political drama is written by Vijay Tendulkar. Based on the novels by Arun Sadhu, the film starred Neelu Phule, Arun Sarnaik, Shriram Lagoo, Nana Patekar, Reema Lagoo and Usha Nadkarni in pivotal roles. The plot revolves around the political corruption in Maharashtra and its impact on the common man. Agashe as Vidhayak Bhudhaji is a complete character master and portrays the role well. The film covers many aspects of Indian politics and society.

3. Phase (2013)

Directed by Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Suktankar, the film depicts the decline and physical degeneration of an old man. Iravati Hershey, Amrita Subhash and Milind Soman played important roles. The story revolves around Dr. Shastri aka Appa (played by Agashe). Appa is highly respected for his knowledge and knowledge of the Vedas. However, the retired Sanskrit professor is suffering from Alzheimer’s due to which all knowledge gradually fades away. Agashe is simply excellent in the role and his performance helps elevate the film to another level.

4. Saamna (1974)

Thriller drama directed by Jabbar Patel was selected for the 25th Berlin Film Festival. The film throws light on the politics of rural Maharashtra. Starring Neelu Phule, Smita Patil, Sriram Lagoo and Vilas Rakate, the film became a benchmark in the Marathi film industry. Agashe plays Maruthi Kamble, a soldier who returns home from war and challenges a corrupt politician for his exploitative practices. The dialogues and acting of each character in the film make it worth watching.

5. Inclusive (2017)

Filmmaker duo Sumitra Bhave-Sunil Sukthankar directed this National Award-winning family drama. Kasava translates as tortoise, which is a great metaphor for the film’s story. The plot basically shows the effects of depression and how to overcome it. Janki (Iravati Hershey) is traveling to her village and on the way meets a young boy Manav (Rajwade) who attempted suicide. She takes him home for treatment and gives the boy all the help and care he needs to get out of it. Dattabhau’s (Agashe) own life experience helps solve the puzzle for him. Agashe has given a stellar performance in this masterpiece of the film.
