Happy Birthday Ayan Mukerji: Lesser known facts about the director

Ayan Mukerji, one of the most successful Bollywood The directors have turned 38 today. He comes across as an extremely dynamic personality with exceptional creativity. Ayan is a promising young director who rose to fame at a very young age. At the age of 26, he made his debut as a film producer. He has left an indelible mark in the Hindi film industry with just 2 films so far.

It may sound surprising but it is a fact that this talented man struck a chord with both his directorial ventures. Ayan was born on 15 August 1983 in Kolkata in a prestigious family associated with Bollywood. On the special occasion of his birthday, let’s know a little more about the cinematic genius.

-Ayan’s grandmother Satidevi Mukherjee was legend Kishore Kumar’s sister (meaning she was the only sister of Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar – Kishore’s brother).

-Ayan is from the Mukherjee-Samarth family (Hindu Bengali-Marathi family).

Born to Amrit Devi and Deb Mukherjee, Ayan’s lineage is associated with one of the most influential families in Bollywood. His father Deb was a renowned artist (known mostly for his works in Bengali and Hindi films).

His grandfather Shashadhar Mukherjee was a prominent Hindi film producer in the 1930s who started his career with Bombay Talkies. He was one of the founding members of Filmistan Studio in Mumbai.

Ayan’s uncles were Joy Mukherjee (leading actor of the 1960s), and Shomu Mukherjee (husband of famous director, writer, producer and iconic actress Tanuja).

Kajol is Tanisha Ayan’s first cousin, while Rani Mukerji is her second cousin.

Ayan assisted Ashutosh Gowariker in Swades and co-wrote the script of the film.

Ashutosh is Ayan’s brother-in-law as he is married to his half-sister Sunita.

Sunita Gowariker (Ayan’s sister) is Deb’s daughter from her first marriage. He is a model and film producer.

He studied at Jamnabai Narsee School (Ville Parle). Later, Ayan left the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology to pursue his dream profession in Bollywood and became an assistant director at Swades.

-Ayan was also assistant director in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

Very few people know that despite being from a Bengali family, Ayaan is not keen on making a film in Bengali as it will not cater to a global audience, he believes.

Till now Ayan has directed two films, which are as follows:

Wake Up Sid (2009) – Starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor, this coming-of-age drama was written and directed by Ayaan and backed by Dharma Productions. This first film won him the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director. The Producers Guild Film Awards also honored him with the Best Debut Award. Ayaan’s direction brought a rare fervor to the film and the audience loved the fresh plot. The film was a success both commercially and critically.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) – This romcom starring Ranbir, Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur became the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time. In the overseas market, YJHD became the 10th highest grossing film of Bollywood. Apart from winning several awards and the hearts of the audience, the film received the highest number of nominations at the 59th Filmfare Awards. Ayan also hit a six with his second directorial venture. The script as well as the story was his brainchild.

The director has also done some cameos in Hindi films. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is one of them (to sing you dekho na). He also did cameos in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Home Delivery.
