New Delhi: The month of April is full of festivities and one such important festival is Baisakhi also known as Vaisakhi. This year the festival falls on 14th April. Baisakhi is mainly celebrated in the neighboring regions including Punjab and Haryana.
Baisakhi also marks the beginning of the harvest season and the beginning of the Sikh New Year.
The festival is significant because on the eve of Baisakhi, Guru Gobind Singh mobilized the Sikhs to fight against the Mughals and inspired them with his words and actions. This day is considered auspicious among Hindus as it marks the beginning of the Hindu Solar New Year.
On Baisakhi, Sikhs also participate in Nagar Kirtan and spend the day performing skills by the Khalsa. People also recite Gurbani and sing hymns to pay homage to the Guru Granth Sahib which is the holy book of the Sikhs.
Dance performances including Bhangra and Giddha are a common feature on this day. Fairs are organized at different places on Baisakhi.
