Hanuman Jayanti Struggle: 9 Arrested in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri Violence; Uttarakhand on alert; 20 detained in AP uproar

The Delhi Police on Saturday arrested nine persons on charges of rioting and attempt to murder following a clash between two communities during the ‘Shobha Yatra’ on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti in Jahangirpuri. Further investigation is on in the matter.

While there were no casualties, nine people, including eight policemen and a civilian, were injured, and are being treated at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital. A sub-inspector sustained bullet injuries, but his condition is stable. “One of them, the sub-inspector, is shot in the hand. There was no firing from the police side. Tear gas shells were fired by the police,” said Deepender Pathak, special commissioner (law and order).

According to the police, an argument broke out between the two communities, and “things escalated, and both the sides started pelting stones at each other and also set the vehicle on fire,” said a senior police officer.

Security has been tightened in the area this morning, and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday urged everyone to maintain peace and order. Kejriwal said that Lt Gen Anil Baijal has said that all steps will be taken to ensure peace in the region and the guilty will be punished.

Sources said that the Home Ministry has given necessary instructions to the Delhi Police and is keeping a close watch on the situation.

Noida has been put on high alert after Saturday’s incident in North West Delhi. “Patrols were done in crowded areas and markets, near shopping malls, metro stations and areas with mixed population. The patrolling was monitored by senior rank officers and the law and order situation is being continuously monitored, Uttar Pradesh Police said in a statement.

He said that on the instructions of Commissioner Alok Singh, the officers of the police force took out patrolling and foot march in all the three police zones- Noida, Central Noida and Greater Noida.

Uttarakhand on alert

Violence broke out in Uttarakhand’s Roorkee on Saturday after stones were pelted during a procession. In the attack in Bhagwanpur area, about 10 people including the in-charge of Mandavar outpost were injured. The rioters vandalized several vehicles and set two on fire. Bhagwanpur police immediately reached the spot as soon as the information was received. After this incident, a high alert has been issued in the entire state.

Ruckus in Andhra Pradesh

Clashes broke out between two communities in Andhra Pradesh’s Hollagunda during Hanuman Jayanti celebrations organized by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). Stone pelting started when VHP members started playing loud music and shouting slogans. According to the police, stone-pelting lasted for about 10 minutes. The police had said that based on the footage, around 20 have been taken into custody.
