Chanelte did not explain why they decided to withdraw from the case, citing personal reasons. He stepped down a day after one of his assistants, Ernst Lafortune, died under unexplained circumstances. Several days earlier, court clerks investigating Moses’ death told the AP that they had gone into hiding with death threats if they did not change some of the names and statements in their report.

The National Association of Haitian Legal Clerks said in a press release on Thursday that Ernst Lafortune, a clerk working for Chanalte, had died and asked for an investigation to clarify the circumstances. Musa was killed on 7 July, when armed men raided his private home. His wife, Martine Mosse, was seriously injured but is recovering. Police have arrested more than 40 suspects, but there is still no clarity on who was behind the plot to kill him. The detainees include 18 former Colombian soldiers and 20 Haitian police officers.
