Happy Guru Purnima 2022: Celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Buddhist communities across the world, this day acknowledges the contribution of teachers in our lives. Guru Purnima falls on Purnima Tithi (full moon day) in the month of Ashadha. The word Guru is derived from Sanskrit language where ‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘Ru’ means remover of darkness. Guru Purnima is celebrated all over the world. According to the Hindu calendar, this year the auspicious time of Guru Purnima festival will be from 4 am on 13th July to 12:06 am on 14th July.

It is celebrated with great enthusiasm not only in India but also in Nepal, where they reportedly celebrate it as ‘Teacher’s Day’. Guru Purnima gives the first sermon to the first five disciples of Gautam Buddha after attaining enlightenment at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh. However, Jains and Hindus also celebrate this day to honor their teachers and their gurus. Also, Guru Purnima marks the birth ceremony of Ved Vyasa, who wrote the holy book Mahabharata.

Significance of Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima celebrates India’s tradition of ‘guru-shishya’ – a bond that binds a teacher and a student, which has now become a part of India’s culture. It is a day to thank our teachers and gurus who have inspired us to be better versions of ourselves. According to Hindu scriptures, the famous sage Ved Vyas was born on this day. The son of sage Parashara, Veda Vyasa is also known as Maharishi Vyasa. He is considered to be an ancient guru.

How is Guru Purnima celebrated?

On this day people worship their spiritual gurus or gurus. They bring them gifts, visit temples and pay their respects to seek their blessings. Many people also observe a fast to show respect to their guru while praying for his long life. On this day, Hindu scriptures say, Lord Shiva, the first or Adi Guru of the world, imparted the knowledge of yoga to the Saptarishis (seven sages) for the benefit of humanity. Therefore, some people observe a fast in honor of their Guru and seek his blessings.
