New Delhi: Another big gesture to Sikhs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the birthday of Teacher Gobind Singh announced that 26 December would be celebrated as ‘feather children’s day‘ as a tribute to the sons of the 10th Guru who died fighting the Mughals under Aurangzeb.
“Today on the auspicious occasion of Prakash Parv of Shri Guru Gobind” Singh Ji, I am proud to report that from this year onwards, 26th December will be marked as ‘feather hair day.’ It is a fitting tribute to the courage of Sahibzadas and their quest for justice,” tweeted the Prime Minister.
While two sons of Guru Gobind Singh were killed fighting the Mughals, two other sons of Govind Singh were killed with live bricks on the orders of Aurangzeb’s governor of Sirhind.
The PM said that Veer Bal Diwas will be celebrated on the same day when two younger sons Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji were martyred after being sealed alive in a wall. “These two gentlemen preferred death rather than deviate from the noble principles of religion,” Modi said in reference to the siblings’ refusal to agree to change their faith in order to avoid death. .
The announcement, which coincided with the formal start of the election process in Punjab, is the latest in a series of decisions taken by the PM to honor Sikh gurus. He had earlier announced the withdrawal of three agricultural laws – a sad issue for Sikh farmers who led the movement against the initiative – on the birthday of Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak Dev. The Modi government also celebrated the 400th anniversary of the martyrdom of the ninth Guru. Welcoming the decision to celebrate Veer Bal Diwas, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the “incomparable sacrifice and patriotism” of the Char Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri to protect the country and religion is the legacy of the country.
Shah said, “I welcome this decision wholeheartedly… Taking inspiration from the patriotism of Sahibzadas, today crores of children will not only be able to contribute in the service of the nation, but their sacrifice will be remembered for generations to come.”
BJP President JP Nadda said that this decision is a true tribute to the patriotism of the Char Sahibzadas and will inspire the coming generation with the love of patriotism.
Describing it as commendable, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said, “The courage shown by Sahibzade in the face of heavy persecution is unmatched and everyone across the world should know about his supreme sacrifice.”
