Ahmedabad: A murder convict who jumped off parole after absconding for thirty-five years was arrested by the police. Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad in Rajkot said on Saturday. Dhirendra was arrested along with his brother Chandrakant in 1984 for the murder of Kalu Patel and a case was registered against both of them at Chowk Bazar police station in Surat city, the official said.
The brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment, and in 1987, they were released on parole after the murder of their younger brother. They were on the run since he told her.
The official said Dhirendra was looking for an opportunity to flee abroad like his brother Chandrakant, who is absconding.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that after jumping on parole, the accused returned to his native village Jetpur and informed the villagers and relatives that he has been released by the Supreme Court,” the official said.
He said he then fled to Jaipur in Rajasthan, where he faked identity as Dalsukhbhai and worked as a businessman before returning to his native village during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The officer said that Gujarat ATS sub-inspector RB Rana received information that Dhirendra was living under a fake identity in Jetpur, following which the officers worked for three months to trace the accused and track his movements.
