Gujarat sees 80% spike with 2,265 daily Covid cases, 5 IAS officers positive Surat News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD/ GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat A major spike in daily Covid cases was recorded on Tuesday, just ahead of the big-ticket Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) and its pre-event beginning Wednesday.
In the 24 hours ending 5 pm on Tuesday, the state added 2,265 new Covid cases – the highest in the last 221 days or seven months. Compared to Monday’s tally of 1,259, it was an 80% daily jump – the highest in the past seven days.
Five prominent IAS officers of the Gujarat cadre, including two top functionaries of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, tested positive or were suspected of contracting the infection following symptoms. Officials include Manoj Agarwal, Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), Rajkumar Beniwal, Commissioner of Municipal Administration and MD of GUDC; JP Gupta, principal secretary (finance), Harit Shukla, tourism secretary, and Jai Prakash Shivhare, state health commissioner.
CMO sources said all the five have tested positive for Covid-19. Manoj Agarwal, JP Gupta and Harit Shukla have tested positive for the second time. They were first infected during the second wave. These five are playing an important role in organizing VGGS in the state or fighting Covid. Ahmedabad city emerged as the epicenter of the massive spike as daily cases rose from 631 on Monday to 1,290 on Tuesday in the last 24 hours. The city accounts for 57% of the daily cases in the state – the highest for any city in the past six months.
Ahmedabad’s TPR in top 5 of the country
An analysis of the weekly test positivity rate (TPR) by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare indicated that Ahmedabad’s TPR was 6.5% for the week of December 28 – January 3 – 65 positive patients were found for every 1,000 tests. It was in the top five among cities with a population of over 3 million.
In comparison, Delhi had 6.4%, Chennai 4.9%, Bengaluru 2.2% and Hyderabad 0.3%. The top TPRs include Kolkata (38%), Mumbai (13.9%), Gurugram (8.9%) and Thiruvananthapuram (7.7%).
Keeping in view the ever-increasing cases in the state, members of the Gujarat branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) urged the state government to stop major public events and reduce the capacity of malls/multiplexes/restaurants etc by 50%.
