Gujarat election results 2022: Congress likely to lose leader of opposition’s post in the state

Gujarat Election Result 2022: More humiliation is coming Congress’ way as the party has managed to win only 16 seats in the Gujarat Assembly elections. Adding salt to the injury, the age-old party is also likely to lose the post of Leader of the Opposition in the state.

The Legislative Assembly of Gujarat has 182 seats. However, a party needs at least 10 per cent of the seats to retain the position of Leader of the Opposition. With the Congress registering its worst ever performance in the Gujarat elections 2022, it did not even manage the numbers required to appoint a leader of the opposition in the state.

However, it is not only in Gujarat but also at the Center that the Congress could not appoint a LoP after two national elections, one in 2014 and the other in 2019. This is because the party could win only 44 and 52. seats, respectively. Although it tried to appoint Mallikarjun Kharge as the Leader of the Opposition, the then Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan refused to do so as per rules.

Mr Kharge, notably, is the first Congress chief in two decades who is not related to the Gandhi family.

Mr Kharge was invited to meetings of a panel to appoint the anti-corruption body Lokpal in the first term of the Modi government that began in 2014. However, he did not accept the invitation in protest against the Speaker’s decision not to appoint him as Leader of the Opposition.

BJP cannot be blamed here as Congress did the same to the opposition in 1980 and 1984 during their rule. It has not given the post of LoP to any party after the Congress won with a huge majority. National Election.

In the Gujarat Assembly Elections 2022, BJP is all set to create a record once again and perform brilliantly in the state. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has also won from Ghatlodia seat.
