An accused of attempt to murder hurled a stone at a sessions judge during court proceedings in Gujarat’s Navsari on Friday.

An accused in an attempt to murder case hurled a stone at a sessions judge during court proceedings in Gujarat’s Navsari on Friday.

Fortunately, Additional Sessions Judge AR Desai had a narrow escape as the stone thrown by accused Dharmesh Rathod missed and hit the wall behind, Navsari police said in a statement.

Three policemen who took Rathore from Surat’s Lajpore jail to the Navsari sessions court were suspended for dereliction of duty, the press release said.

He said a fresh First Information Report (FIR) would be lodged against Rathod in connection with the incident.

Rathore is already facing cases including attempt to murder (Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code) and ‘assault using dangerous weapons’ (Section 326), the release said.

It said that the police personnel accompanying him – an assistant sub-inspector and two constables – should have frisked him thoroughly when he was taken into custody from the Lajpair Jail authorities in Surat.

Pratap Mahida, a lawyer who witnessed the incident, said Rathore had earlier hurled a shoe at a magistrate.

“When the police knew his record, they should have been extra careful,” Mahida said.
