Ground Report | Polarization looms large in Uttar Pradesh’s Loni amid Ram Rajya vs ‘Gunda Raj’ debate

Ram Janmabhoomi in Loni Uttar Pradesh is more than 600 km away from Ayodhya but the assurance of Ram Rajya construction and slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ are echoing in the assembly constituency.

Nand Kishore Gurjar, sitting BJP MLA and candidate of Loni, says he has created Ram Rajya in the area where butcher shops have closed, crime has come to naught, Muslims rejoice over Ram Mandir decision, There was no protest, the cows are safe regarding the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA).

Against whom does Ram Rajya stand? Goondagardi,” asks the BJP MLA.

When Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accused the Samajwadi Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal (SP-RLD) of giving tickets to mafias and goons, the Loni constituency topped his list. The alliance, which is considered sensitive and once infamous for criminal activities, has fielded RLD leader Madan Bhaiya from Loni.

Once considered a bastion of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), people believe that this time the real contest is between Nand Kishore Gurjar of BJP and Madan Bhaiya of RLD. The RLD is trying to consolidate minority votes in the constituency, with the BJP MLA making religious statements with a large section of the Muslim population.

However, Hindu votes should not unite. RLD’s brother promised development and communal harmony. Gurjar says that there are more than 1.60 lakh Muslim voters in this constituency.

“In the last five years, the BJP has created rivalry among communities and this is the only issue that is yet to be discussed, especially in Loni. Our issue is to solve this and create communal harmony and bring people in the stream of development,” says the RLD candidate.

On CM Yogi Adityanath calling him a “mafia”, Bhaiya says that there are only two cases registered against him in his election affidavit, which are also of political nature.

“In my election affidavit, I have two cases. One of them pertains to elections where the court has given a stay. The second one is also about elections and the charge sheet is yet to be done. There are many against whom there are dozens of such cases. If you call me the mafia, what do you call them?” Bhaiya is justified.

Gurjar further says that Loni is made on Ram Rajya, in which no crime has been registered. Listing out the development works done in his constituency, the BJP MLA promised to turn Loni into a “future London”.

The BJP MLA says that when there were protests against the CAA across the country, no such protest was seen in his constituency.

How did he achieve this? “I have told all Muslims that their ancestors were Hindus. Most of the Muslims celebrated the decision of Ram temple in Loni itself. Cows are safe in my parliamentary constituency. And I have closed all the meat shops. Have you seen meat in Ram Rajya? So, how can they allow meat here? If they want meat they can go to Delhi. We will not stop them. We do not want people to fall ill after consuming meat,” said the MLA.

On meat ban by BJP candidate, Bhaiya says, ‘When the Nizam is fine, people will be fine. Those are the crazy people who will be fine. They have no control over the language. (When a leader is subdued, the followers are also subdued. The frenzied mob will be subdued. They have no control over what they say).

The Election Commission has recently sent a notice to Gurjar for making inflammatory remarks – ‘Na Ali, Na Bahubali, Sirf Bajrangbali’. However, Gurjar says he stands by his comments.

Bhaiya is unflinched by Gurjar’s comments on him and decides not to say on Akhilesh Yadav’s Jinnah comment. “Unke baare mein kya kehna jo Election Commission ka palan nahi karte. Yadav ji ne aisa kahan hamein pata nahi (What do I say about those who don’t even abide by the Election Commission’s directions. I have no knowledge of Yadav saying it).

Gurjar has an explanation. “By Ali I meant Muhammad Ali Jinnah. I have submitted my reply and how can anyone defend Jinnah, who killed lakhs of Hindus, raped women, divided the country. And the same party which believes in Jinnah has given ticket to one Bahubali (Madan Bhaiya) and Bajrangbali will destroy them all,” says the BJP candidate.

He says Akhilesh’s act of releasing the “terrorists” brought the SP to 48 and that it would be costly for Jinnah’s remarks as he would get only 8 seats this time. The first phase of polling in Loni will be held on February 10. Polling will be held in seven phases for 403 assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.
