Kanpur: Green Park A drubbed Cantonment Board A by 5-1 in the final of under-14 hockey championship held at the Green Park stadium on the occasion of Sports Day which is observed every year on August 29 to mark the birthday of hockey wizard late Dhyan Chand.
The final proved a one sided affair in which Mohit and Sahil scored two goals each and Golu scored 1 goal for the winners. For Cantt team, Krishna scored one goal.
Minister for sports and youth welfare Girish Chandra Yadav who was the chief guest offered floral tributes to Major Dhyan Chand and gave away prizes to the winner and runner up team. Earlier, the minister had visited the newly constructed Visitors’ Gallery where divisional commissioner Raj Shekhar welcomed him.
The minister while interacting with the players said that playing in Green Park is a moment of pride for any player. He also visited the Astro turf arena and played hockey for a few minutes. He also greeted and congratulated all on the occasion of the Sports Day. The commissioner said that district and regional level hockey championships were being held here from time to time. He encouraged the players to enjoy the game and play it with complete dedication to achieve higher levels. Deputy director, sports, Mudrika Pathak, additional municipal commissioner SK Tripathi, deputy sports officer Amit Pal, secretary, Kanpur Hockey Association TP Singh former national hockey player Ishrat Kamal and hockey coach Shahid Khan were present on the occasion . A district level junior boys football championship was also organized at the Green Park stadium to mark the Sports Day. Green Park team outplayed Macroberts School team by 2-1 in the final. For the winners Piyush Kanaujia scored a brace while Honey netted a goal for Macrobert School.
