‘Green Jan Andolan’: CM Yogi orders UP government to start mega plantation drive from July 1

With the state government’s mega tree plantation drive from July 1, Uttar Pradesh is all set to increase its green cover.

Under the campaign on the orders of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, 35 crore saplings will be planted across the state by August 15.

On August 15, 75 saplings will be planted in every village of the state on the occasion of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

Presiding over a high-level review meeting, CM Yogi said, “With the spirit of nature conservation of Indian culture, there is a need to take the tree plantation drive forward as a mass movement. As the massive tree plantation drive is about to begin, a detailed program should be prepared to make this campaign a huge success.”

Manoj Singh, ACS, Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said, “Over the years, the state government has worked tirelessly to increase the green cover in Uttar Pradesh. There are a total of more than 58,000 villages in Uttar Pradesh. The government plans to plant more than 43.5 lakh saplings in a day on August 15.

He said that efforts are being made by the Forest Department to increase the green cover in the state, which will help in controlling pollution.

According to the State of Forest Report 2021, 9.23% of the total geographical area of ​​Uttar Pradesh is covered by forests. In 2013 it was 8.82%. The total forest and tree cover has increased by 91 square kilometers during 2019.

The government has now set a target to increase this sector to 15% by 2030. For this, the government will plant 175 crore saplings in the next five years.

Yogi government is doing intensive plantation during monsoon since its first term. As a result, 101.49 crore saplings have been planted between 2017-18 and 2021-2022 through the efforts of the government.

Indigenous plants like Banyan, Peepal, Pakad, Neem, Bael, Amla, Mango, Jackfruit and Drumstick will be given preference during the plantation drive. Its aim is to plant saplings based on the agro-climatic zone of the area concerned.

Forest Department Nodal Agency

The nodal agency for plantation is the Forest Department. But apart from the Forest Department, 26 other departments will take part in this grand campaign.

The target of each department is already set.

The Forest and Rural Development Department has the highest target of planting 12.60 crore and 12.32 crore saplings respectively.

Apart from this, the target of Agriculture Department and Horticulture Department is to plant 2.35 crore and 1.55 crore saplings respectively.

Environment fighters will play an important role in making this campaign a success. Farmers and Beneficiaries of Prime Minister’s Award in Environment, Empowered Forces, Women, Disabled, Low Income Group, Visually Impaired, MNREGA Job Cardholders, Self Help Groups, Village Level and City Development Workers, Forest Workers, Tribal-Forest Area, Chief Minister Abhyudaya Yojana Beneficiaries, teachers-students and women will also be involved in the plantation process.
