HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Grand Strand man is on a mission to help his high school sweetheart who is battling a rare cancer for the second time.
Matteo Montalvo met Haley Smith when he was in high school and fell in love.
The couple says that they have been through the best of times, but things are a little tough right now.
Smith is once again battling Rare Stage Four Cervical Cancer. She had defeated the same type of cancer for the first time when she was just 17 years old.
Smith made the very difficult decision to shave his head this week because the chemo treatment has been more aggressive this time around.
As a gesture of support, Smith’s father had previously shaved his head. The family says that their battle with cancer is also their battle and they will do everything possible to support them in defeating her again.
The family said the process of fighting the disease for the second time is proving to be a bit more challenging and costly. they started gofundme page Was hoping to raise money for medical needs but it was not enough.
Montalvo immediately came up with an idea to help them. He’s been doing car detailing for a few months, and is now donating all his money to Smith and his family to meet their medical needs.
“It shows me every day that I am loved and supported and that every day is something that inspires me,” Smith said.
“I don’t regret anything. I’m so glad I’m doing it for them,” Montalvo said.
Every dollar will go towards Smith’s medical and travel needs in the fight against cancer.
“Sometimes my insurance doesn’t cover every expense,” Smith said. “It’s just one less thing we need to worry about, it’s all these expenses.”
“You can get your car details anywhere. Maybe that place works better than mine. But there is no one reason for this. He doesn’t have the same heart,” Montalvo said.
