Congress spokesperson Pawan Kheda alleged that the Modi government first used Cambridge Analytica (CA), then Pegasus, then Israeli contract hackers led by “Team George” and now it is a tool to “interfere in the Indian political system and democracy”. The race is on for new spyware.

The Congress on Monday accused the government of using a new software to spy on people protesting and harm India’s political and democratic system.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera alleged that the Modi government first used Cambridge Analytica (CA), then Pegasus, then Israeli contract hackers led by “Team George” and now it to “interfere with the Indian political system and democracy”. The race is on for a new spyware.

“Like Pegasus, Cambridge Analytica and the recently exposed ‘Team George’ – the Modi government has now bought a new spyware to spy, spy and surveil individuals and institutions? These institutions include – opposition parties, NGOs, media houses , civil rights activists, the judiciary, the Election Commission, and every other institution that protects any semblance of democracy,” he told reporters.

He said, “If Modi ji is spending so much on malware and spyware to snoop and spy on institutions – why can’t he tell the country who has Rs 20,000 crore in Adani’s shell companies.”

Citing media reports, he said that once again, the BJP government has been “exposed” to the nation for its role and complicity in the “illegal and unconstitutional surveillance racket”, according to trade data analyzed by a leading daily .

“Wasn’t the BJP government spying on its citizens and political leaders for the Parliament of India through Pegasus for the 2019 general elections, and now aiming to repeat the same for the 2024 general elections using another spyware ? Khera asked, “Who in the Government of India bought and deployed the illegal spyware – ‘Pegasus’ from Israeli company NSO and who in the Government of India has started discussions for this new spyware.”
