The Governor organized the foundation day of West Bengal: West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose on Tuesday celebrated the state’s foundation day at the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her “surprise” over his “unilateral” decision to celebrate the occasion.

No representative of Mamta government participated in this program.

In a letter to the Governor on Monday night, Mamata expressed ‘shock’ and said that the state “was not established on any particular day, least of all on any 20 June”.

“Partition involved the displacement of lakhs of people across the border and the death and displacement of innumerable families,” he said.

what happened in the program

Bose spoke of ‘zero tolerance’ for violence and insisted on the right of residents to vote freely. His remarks came in the backdrop of violent incidents in the state ahead of the panchayat elections.

“I am dedicated to the betterment and welfare of the people. Bengal has immense potential and is brimming with talent,” the governor said.

President Draupadi Murmu also congratulated the people of the state on the foundation day on Monday.

On June 20, 1947, the Bengal Legislative Assembly held two sittings of different sets of legislators. One of those who made West Bengal a part of India voted in favor of the resolution with a majority. The second was that of legislators from the areas that eventually became East Pakistan.

How did BJP react to Mamata’s objection?

West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Shubhendhu Adhikari said that the foundation day should be celebrated in a grand manner.

He said, “On this day in 1947, a resolution was passed in the West Bengal Assembly that Bengal would remain with India and not with Pakistan. It (Foundation Day) should be celebrated in a grand manner.
