Government increased MSP for Rabi crops, Tomar said – some people are giving wrong information about closure

Minimum Support Price: Farmers have been protesting against these three agricultural laws in the country since last year. Farmers are demanding that these three agricultural laws should be repealed. Meanwhile, the government has given a nice surprise to the farmers and increased the MSP of the Rabi crop. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, “Some people are trying to spread misinformation that MSP (Minimum Support Price) will be stopped. On the contrary, after the implementation of agricultural laws, the procurement of crops at MSP and the payment of MSP will be done. The rate is increasing continuously.

Today the government increased the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat by Rs 40 to Rs 2,015 per quintal for the current crop year 2021-22. Also, the MSP of mustard has been increased by Rs 400 to Rs 5,050 per quintal. The purpose of this initiative of the government is to increase the income of the farmers along with the cultivation of these crops. A decision in this regard was taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Increase in MSP

Actually, MSP is the rate at which the government buys food grains from farmers. At present, the government fixes the MSP for 23 crops grown in both Kharif and Rabi seasons. Sowing of Rabi (winter) crops starts from October immediately after the harvesting of Kharif (summer) crops. Wheat and mustard are the main Rabi crops. CCEA has approved increase in MSP for six rabi crops for the crop year 2021-22 (July-June) and 2022-23 marketing seasons. The support price of barley has been increased by Rs 35 and is now Rs 1,635 per quintal for the crop year 2021-22 from Rs 1,600 per quintal last year.

In pulses, the MSP of gram has been increased by Rs 130 to Rs 5,230 per quintal, while the MSP for lentils has been increased by Rs 400 to Rs 5,500 per quintal from the earlier rate of Rs 5,100. Talking about oilseeds, the government has increased the MSP of mustard by Rs 400 to Rs 5,050 per quintal for the crop year 2021-22, from Rs 4,650 per quintal last year. The MSP of sunflower has been increased from Rs 5,327 per quintal to Rs 114 per quintal.
