Gorakhnath temple attack: UP government handed over the matter to ATS, said- angle of terror cannot be ruled out

new Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to transfer the Gorakhnath temple case to the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), saying the possibility of terrorism cannot be ruled out, news agency ANI reported.

The incident took place on Sunday when a man allegedly forcibly entered the Gorakhnath temple and attacked policemen, while another was injured.

Additional Director General of Law and Order (ADG) Prashant Kumar told ANI on Monday, “A man forcibly tried to enter the temple premises and attacked the policemen on duty with a sharp weapon.”

“The accused has been identified as Ahmed Murtaza Abbasi, a resident of Gorakhpur,” the ADG said.

He further said, “The matter has been transferred to ATS as we cannot rule out the terror angle in the incident and a detailed investigation has been initiated.”

Gorakhpur SSP Vipin Tada also said, “The accused tried to forcibly enter the Gorakhnath temple while raising religious slogans but was stopped by the police.”

“Two policemen have been injured in the incident and are being treated,” Tada said.

The SSP further explained the sections under which the case has been registered.

He said, “Cases have been registered against the accused under the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1932 under Section 301 (attempt to murder), Section 7 (molestation of any person prejudicial to employment or profession) of the Indian Penal Code. “

Meanwhile, UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya said that the state government has taken cognizance of the incident on Sunday, reported ANI.

“The attempt to illegally enter the Gorakhnath temple and attack the security personnel is extremely sad and condemnable. Maurya tweeted, the state government has given instructions to investigate the incident.
