Google employees were informed that perks would vary based on office space requirements.

Google recently told employees that some employees will have to share desk space amid plans to downsize some of its offices.

The media reported that amid fears of a recession, tech giant Google is also taking several cost-cutting measures, such as free snacks for its existing employees and cutting back on workout classes.

In a memo sent by Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat, Google employees were informed that perks will vary based on office space requirements and trends observed in each office location, Business The insider reported.

The company’s micro kitchens that offer free snacks such as cereal, espresso and seltzer water will be closed on days that typically have significantly lower volumes.

Some fitness class schedules will be shifted based on how they are being used.

According to the memo, the company will also stop spending on personal equipment like laptops.

It was noted that the funds would be used on works that are of high priority.

“Since equipment is a significant expense for a company of our size, we will be able to make meaningful savings here,” Porat wrote in a memo released by Business Insider.

He added that the company will reduce the pace of its hiring and reallocate teams to focus on high priority work.

On January 20, Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed in a letter to employees that around 12,000 people would be laid off globally, which is more than 6 percent of the total workforce.

Last month, the tech giant informed its employees through an email that fewer of them would be promoted to more senior levels this year than last year.

It also reportedly indicated to former employees who were placed on maternity or medical leave that they would not be paid for the remainder of their time off.
