Google: One question Google CEO Sundar Pichai keeps asking himself to be a better leader – Times of India

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai Certainly not an easy task. As the management of one of the world’s largest technology companies and caring for the interests of millions of customers and users, as well as ensuring its continued growth Google Services and products have a huge responsibility. The recent India-born Pichai shared a question which he says helps him “remember his role”.
In an interview with Inc.com’s Justin Barriso, Pichai shared a question that CEOs of Google and Alphabet often ask themselves. Pichai reportedly learned this question years ago from his mentor and ex Columbia University Football coach turned business coach bill campbell. Reportedly, Campbell used to ask her a question every time she met: “Are you breaking up? What ties did you break up with this week?,” referring to how much she was able to move things along in a business context. Well capable, did he break the impasse when his allies were in a jam at one point.
When asked what he does to get results in meetings, he said that he tries to involve people in the conversation so that everyone can participate. If the meetings are not virtual, he actually goes around the table one by one, and asks people to clearly state their position, to make sure the introverts in the meeting have opinions, perspectives, and attitudes. The stands are brought to the front.
Bariso tells readers that if they want to be a better leader they should take a page out of Sundar Pichai’s book and ask themselves:
“What ties did I break this week?”
Then, remember:

  • Prioritize the people you want to please
  • chase progress, not perfection
  • see the big picture
