Google may launch new Nest Hub speaker with a detachable tablet

Google may be working on a new smart speaker for its lineup that includes a detachable tablet. According to new reports, the company may add a new form factor to its Nest smart speaker lineup this year.

The design could include a smart speaker and a tablet that detaches from the body to be used as a standalone device. The speaker of the tablet is likely to sit at the base, making it look like part of the entire unit.

The development is hardly surprising as Google continues to make changes to the Nest speaker’s UI and the Home app that works in conjunction with the devices.

Introducing a tablet on a speaker sounds interesting, but we’re hoping Google has a clear plan for how the form factor becomes useful to people. Adding a tablet could also mean an increase in the price of the device, so the price factor becomes even more obvious.

The other big question is what software will be used to integrate both the speaker and the tablet. Android has never been a polished platform for big screens until Android 12L changes our minds later this year.

And here Chrome OS is less likely to be used as the platform is now targeting powerful devices.

Google’s smart speaker lineup currently includes the Mini, Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max with larger 10-inch screens. It’s possible that Google realized that instead of combining the two devices together, the tablet could be taken apart, giving users a greater chance of becoming relevant.

The new device could appear in a few months either at Google I/O 2022 or be part of the main event in October, where the new Pixel 7 series will be unveiled in the market.
