According to Google, users will now be able to read, reply to and search their Gmail messages even when they are not connected to the Internet.

Gmail is arguably the most popular mailing service. As of last year, more than 1.8 billion people were using Gmail, and the Google email service accounts for 18 percent of the email client market share. In addition, about 75 percent of people open their Gmail on their mobile devices. Keeping this in mind, Google has now started the ability to take Gmail offline.

According to California-based tech giant Mountain View, users will now be able to read, respond and search their Gmail messages even when they are not connected to the Internet. It comes as a breakthrough feature of Google, and will work very well in places with low connectivity or no internet, especially in remote areas. It’s also easy to turn Gmail offline, and users can do so in a few simple steps. This way:

  • Go to mail.google.com. Google says that Gmail Offline will only work on Google Chrome, and will only work if you’re browsing in normal mode, not Incognito.
  • Once you’re in your inbox, click the Settings or cogwheel button.
  • Click “View All Settings”.
  • Once you are on the page, click on the “Offline” tab.
  • Click the “Enable Offline Mail” checkbox. As soon as you click the checkbox, Gmail will show the new settings.
  • You can choose how many days of email you want to sync with your Gmail.
  • Google shows the remaining space on your computer, and also gives you the option to keep offline data on the computer, or delete all offline data from your computer.
  • Once you choose to keep or delete data offline, you can click “Save Changes” and offline Gmail will be activated on your computer.

Google recommends bookmarking Gmail to keep offline access easy. If you’re using Gmail with your school work account, you’ll need to ask the administrator to enable the offline setting. This feature has been rolled out for all Gmail users, and you can turn on offline mailing right now by following the above steps.
