Good Governance Day 2021: This is how Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary is celebrated on 25 December

Good Governance Day 2021: With an aim to create awareness about accountability in government among the citizens of the country, every year on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, 25 December is observed as Good Governance Day.

The day was first celebrated in 2014 when Vajpayee was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, along with Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. After the award ceremony, the Government of India celebrated that day as Good Governance Day.

Vajpayee is considered the embodiment of good governance who once said that “India is not a piece of land but a living entity.” He always emphasized that India needs good governance which works by the rules of democracy rather than a strong government.

Demonstrating his ability to govern, Vajpayee is also credited with making India a nuclear power when India conducted three nuclear tests in Pokhran in 1998, even as it soured its relations with the US. . Thus, the day is observed to remind the government that it should be transparent, fair and development oriented.

According to the United Nations, there are eight characteristics that indicate the good governance of a country. Good governance should be participatory, accountable, accountable, efficient, inclusive, equitable, consensus oriented and follow the rule of law. Good governance is also expected to reduce corruption and take into account the voices of vulnerable communities and minorities.

Intensifying its efforts to spread awareness about good governance, the Government of India has decided to observe it for a full week from 20 December to 25 December this year. This year’s theme is ‘Administration of Gaon Ki Aur’, and the day will be celebrated as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

In line with the theme of the week, the government aims to drive a campaign to improve service delivery and redressal of public grievances, covering all states, union territories and districts of India.
