Australian pacer Michael Neser has said a good batting performance helped calm his nerves and gave him the confidence to come back with the ball and dodge England on the second day of the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval here. Neser hit 35 off 24 balls on his Test debut as Australia extended their first innings lead to a mammoth total of 473/9 declared in 150.4 overs.

The pacer, who has replaced Pat Cummins after the captain was ruled out of the second Test, then caught the wicket of opener Haseeb Hameed in 2.1 overs, which he bowled on Friday and reduced the tourists to 17/2. 8.4 overs. Neser, 31, had to wait a long time to be painted in the Australian color as he has been the 12th man more than a dozen times.

“(Batting first) probably got a little nervous and I probably picked up my bowling pace,” Neser told SEN Test Cricket before the start of the third day on Saturday.

“Even though I bowled only a few overs, it felt like the ball was going well. I think this is my philosophy (do good things and good things will come). I just want to make my country and my family proud, and being given a chance to represent my country is like a dream come true.”
