Upon separation, it’s completely normal to feel all over the place and have a wide range of emotions, including resentment, sadness, regret, jealousy, and relief, as you grapple with the end of the relationship.

The end of any relationship is undoubtedly one of the most daunting parts to cope with. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been with someone for a few weeks, months, or years, one thing is certain: It ain’t easy. No one is ready for a breakup; after all, you had planned a future with this person.  So, if you are also feeling happy one moment and devastated the next, don’t be surprised; you are not alone. This emotional rollercoaster is a normal part of the healing process.

Speaking on a similar vein, an Instagram user named Stephanie Rigg shared eight things that are completely normal after a breakup and said, “It’s so important to have realistic expectations when it comes to breakups and how very hard, they can be. So often we feel caught off-guard by the many big and conflicting emotions we’re feeling, and we take that to mean that something is wrong. When really, grief, doubt, confusion, and loneliness are all part of the challenge of navigating a breakup.”

So, if you are also going through a breakup, read below the 8 things that are completely normal after the heartbreaking situation:

  • Intensely missing your ex, even if deep down you know the breakup was the right thing.
  • Only remembering the positives and developing amnesia about all the things that weren’t working.
  • Wondering if you’ll ever find someone else with whom you feel comfortable.
  • Replaying everything that happened between you and second-guessing yourself.
  • Feeling dread about the idea of starting from scratch with someone new.
  • Grieving not only the past but the future you’ll no longer share together.
  • Struggling with not knowing how they’re feeling, what they’re doing, or whether they’ve moved on.
  • Fearing that they’ll be happier with someone else and wondering what that means about you.

But at the same time, the sooner you get normal, the better it is for you. Here are some tips that might be helpful to overcome a breakup:

  • No one usually wants to accept reality after a breakup. So, the first step to overcoming the heartbreak is to accept the truth. Being in denial mode will make it harder to fully detach and start healing.
  • The most common thought after a breakup is, ‘Can I ever fall in love again?’, ‘Why does this always happen to me?’ or ‘What did I do wrong’. But accept the truth that this has happened to almost everyone. It is wiser to have positive thoughts and move forward.
  • In the world of social media, it can be tempting to stalk their profile, but the more you think of your ex, the more you will feel guilty. Hence, one should remain disconnected from the lover after a breakup in order to move on.
  • Lastly, it is important to keep yourselves busy to overcome the thoughts of the moments that you spent together. Spend your free time watching movies, reading books, chilling out with friends, and doing other activities.
