Goa launches monsoon trekking program to boost hinterland tourism

The Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) recently announced a monsoon trekking program in an effort to focus on the hinterland of the state. The program is being launched in the state to boost the economy of those areas which receive less footfall.

Goa is one of the most prominent holiday destinations India has to offer. Tourists come in lakhs every year but most of them prefer to visit the beaches. Sun, sand and sea define their vacation in Goa. However, Goa is not just that. It is full of flora and fauna that live in some of the more secluded areas.

GTDC plans to boost the economy, and at the same time, focus on employment and thus inland tourism for the local people in these less-visited areas. Elaborating on the event, Sanvoordem MLA, Dr Ganesh Gaonkar told The Times of India that there are many things that cannot be seen or experienced on beaches. Under the monsoon trekking program, tourists will get a chance to roam in a pristine environment with fresh air.

Assuring a safe trekking environment, he said, “Your safety is of utmost importance.” Under the monsoon trekking programme, tourists will get a chance to walk in the dense forest and to help them navigate, the tourism department will deploy a team of certified guides trained under the GTDC and the forest department.

The program has reached the working phase with the commencement of the first series of Monsoon Trekking. The trek is being organized only on Sundays. Nikhil Desai, managing director, GTDC, said, “It will be a four-hour trek where tourists will enjoy seeing the flora and fauna and how beautiful the interior is.”

Last month, the tourism department had also announced the introduction of helicopter rides for tourists. Such steps are being taken to prolong the tourist stay in Goa. This is because being a small state, tourists plan their sightseeing tours within a span of three to four days.
