Panaji: A Covid-19 Survivorwho have recently had a kidney transplant Through laparoscopic nephrectomy, has resumed its work railway.
After the patient was diagnosed with diabetes, the transplant was performed at Manipal Hospital in Dona Paula kidney Disease. Nephrologist Amol Mahaldar said that while the patient’s wife had consented to donate one of her kidneys, the transplant had to be deferred after the patient contracted Covid-19. He was managed with dialysis and constant monitoring while in home isolation. “We could do the laparoscopic procedure only after recovering from Covid-19. The recipient went home 10 days after surgery and completed five months. They have also received vaccination against Covid-19 and resumed work in Konkan Railway Corporation,” said Mahaldar.
International experts say that laparoscopic nephrectomy donors require significantly less hospitalization, experience less pain and are able to return to their normal routine sooner. They require less support while recovering than those who have had an open nephrectomy.
Dr Deepak Dubey, President, Urology Services, Manipal Group said that patients from Goa suffering from end stage kidney disease can avail state-of-the-art facilities for kidney transplant. “Laparoscopic harvesting of the kidney will save the donor a lot of pain and discomfort compared to an open operation. Anyway, they are doing a noble cause of donating their organ to a loved one. Hence the procedure should be conducted in the least painful manner,” Dubey said.
The surgical team included Urologist Dr Madhav Sanjgiri, Laparoscopic Surgeon Dr Jagannath Kulkarni and Cardiovascular Surgeon Dr Rakesh Deshmane. The transplant anesthesia was administered by Dr. Divya Mahaldar, Dr. Savita Sanjgiri and Dr. Yogesh Gawade along with Dr. Dalia Bhandare.
