Goa close to implementing ban on single use plastic Goa News – Times of India

Panaji: The state government has appointed Theo Energy Research Institute (terry) Formulating an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy and implementing a ban on single-use plastics.
A senior official said that the Environment Department has received a proposal from TERI to prepare the EPR policy on the basis of nomination. As per the proposal, the Department is not liable to make any payment to TERI, 1.5% of the amount collected from implementing the EPR, to the Institute for three years after the EPR policy prepared by TERI is accepted and notified. Payment is to be made, the senior official said.
In addition to drafting the policy, the research institute will collect both qualitative and quantitative data on: solid residue, especially plastic waste, from various places.
It will also define producer, type of waste and waste generation, prepare a report on plastic waste generation and present status and status of implementation of PWM Rules, 2016 (amended in 2018) and present case studies on best practices in a phased manner Single use plastics and allied products.
Other activities include identification of deficiencies in waste management in different parts of Goa, need analysis, preparation of SOPs and training kits for various stakeholders and producers.
While formulating the EPR policy, it will consider sustainable and integrated solid waste management and formulate a plan to phase out plastic and allied products (single use and packaging) from Goa.
TERI will also organize a webinar or workshop with stakeholders to provide an overview of the project and discuss issues on EPR, the senior official said.
