Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry appeals to the government to waive off cess on inland cargo. Goa News – Times of India

Panaji: Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) appealed on Wednesday transportation Minister Mauvin Godinho to waive off the Goa Rural Improvement and Welfare Cess on cargo carried through inland and coastal vessels. GCCI also requested the Minister to improve road connectivity for public and private jetties, which will give a boost to the inland shipping and logistics sector.
The Transport Department levies the Goa Rural Improvement and Welfare Cess on cargo such as iron ore and minerals other than coal imported and transported in Goa.
“with the implementation of” GSTSuch levies, which were prevalent in other states, have been abolished and the result is that most of the cargoes, which are handled in Goa, are subject to cess, resulting in higher logistics compared to neighboring states. There is a cost,” said the member of logistics, GCCI. Samiti Naresh Mandrekar
The exemption on payment of cess for imported and processed minerals in Goa’s inland waterways will provide relief to the coastal and inland waterways industry. “Bauxite is one such commodity, which can be imported at Goa port, and elimination of cess can result in substantial savings in inland transport and will be viable for the importer as well as the transporters. This can open avenues for more such imports at Goa port and give trade to local stakeholders in the inland shipping sector,” said Sanjay Amonkar, Director, GCCI.
The GCCI claimed that Godinho understood the concern and assured the delegation that their concern would be addressed.
GCCI treasurer Chandrakant Gavas, Amonkar and Mandrekar met Godinho and submitted a written appeal where they also said that there are “serious issues” regarding first and last mile road connectivity in public and private jetties.
Amonkar said, “GCCI has recommended to identify such ghats in Goa and widen access roads to such ghats along with other infrastructure like electricity and water supply for smooth movement of goods within the state. ”
Godinho said that he has always been working to boost Goa’s economy and will provide necessary infrastructure and support to the industry.
