Goa artisans to get Rs 22 crore Goa Haat in Panaji Goa News – Times of India

Panaji: The decade-long project of creating a dedicated market for artisans and self-help groups of Goa has got a new lease of life and another effort is underway to build it. Goa HateA village market on the lines of Dilli Haat in New Delhi.
Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has initiated a fresh effort for the construction of a three-storey complex with an estimated cost of Rs 22 crore.
Sources said the project would have stilt parking, an upper ground floor and an exhibition area, spread over 4,500 sqm and would take about a year to complete. The project will come up on the eastern side of the Rua de Orem creek in Neugi Nagar Panaji,
According to government officials, the facility will act as a one-stop shop for the artisans and craftsmen of Goa to promote local handicrafts.
Officials said this would not only create entrepreneurship opportunities but would also help in revenue generation.
Originally conceptualized as the Shilpgram project by the Congress in 2009, it was scrapped in 2013 by former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
It was revived in 2018, when land was earmarked for the project.
The Shilpgram project was to facilitate the export of Goa HandicraftsTo promote handicraft based tourism on the lines of Dilli Haat and Chokhi Dhani in Jaipur and to promote local handicrafts and artisans among tourists.
In 2018, the state government had announced that it intended to create a dedicated market for handicrafts and called it Goa Market.
Goa Haat will be funded by the state and central government of about Rs 22.1 crore.
GTDC has floated a tender for selecting a developer for construction of the structure on the basis of the detailed project report already prepared.
