GMCH records zero admission after 2 years of Covid | Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: For the first time on Saturday in the two years of the pandemic, zero patients were admitted at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) here.
Though the number of admissions started declining towards the end of last year at the premier hospital in the region, it was never completely free of covid patients. Principal of the hospital, Dr. Achyut Baishyasaid in the now defunct Kalapahar Covid care facility, which was under the administrative control of the GMCH, a few cases were there last year as the second wave lingered on and the third wave hit the state.
“We discharged a baby from the pediatric ICU on Friday, and today there was no Covid case in GMCH. The baby turned Covid negative on Friday morning. For the first time, we spent a day without a single Covid patient at GMCH,” Baishya told TOI on Saturday evening.
He added that by Thursday the number of admitted Covid cases at GMCH had reduced to two. “An elderly Covid patient was shifted to a hospital ward from the ICU on Thursday and got discharged by night,” he added. Over 10,000 patients got treated at GMCH and other health facilities under its control since the first wave.
Health department officials said across Assam, less than 50 patients are currently being treated in hospitals. The Friday night report issued by the health department said there are 966 active cases in the state and the recovery rate is 98.77%. Assam witnessed the first case on March 31, 2020.
While Kamrup (Metro) district, which covers Guwahati city areas, remained the biggest concern, here too, the positivity rate and daily cases have been contained. In the urban district, the test positivity rate has been around 1%.
Assam NHM director, Dr Lakshmanan S, told TOI that only 45 Covid patients are admitted in different hospitals in the state at present. He informed that 15 of them are in ICUs. “The Covid situation has been significantly improved. At present only eight Covid patients are on ventilation support and that, too, because of other complications related to Covid. However, we are keeping an alert,” he said.
Lakshmanan appealed to the people to maintain Covid appropriate behavior and go for testing voluntarily in case they have any symptoms. “About 1.1% positivity rate in Guwahati after removing mandatory testing is quite satisfactory. The corresponding figure in the state is 0.70%,” he added.
