Sri Lanka crisis

After fleeing the country amid widespread protests against him, Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from the presidency of Sri Lanka. Protesters stormed the current palace, demanding Rajapaksa’s resignation amid the economic and political crisis in the country. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed as the acting President.

Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic of Serbia became Wimbledon champion for the seventh time after defeating Nick Kyrgios of Australia 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) in the final. Russian-born Kazakhstan tennis player Elena Rybkina defeated Tunisia’s Ons Jabur 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the Wimbledon women’s singles final to clinch her maiden Grand Slam title. Rybakina also became the first tennis player from Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam title.

NIRF Ranking

IIT Madras retains its top position as overall higher educational institution India For the fourth consecutive year in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). IISc Bangalore was named the best university in the country, while Jamia Millia Islamia ranked second and third in the list of best universities in the NIRF Ranking 2022. AIIMS Delhi continued its reign as the top medical institution in India.

India reported its first monkeypox case on 14 July in Kerala. The 35-year-old man, a resident of Kollam district, had recently returned from the United Arab Emirates. Following the case, the Center issued an advisory asking states to ensure screening and testing of all suspected cases at points of entry and in the community as part of India’s preparedness against the zoonotic disease.

T20 World cup update

The Netherlands and Zimbabwe defeated USA and Papua New Guinea respectively in the semi-finals of the Qualifier B round to seal their place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. This tournament is to be played in Australia from 16 October to 13 November.

COVID-19 Updates

India reported 20,044 fresh COVID-19 cases on July 16, taking the 7-day average to 17,954 from the previous week’s 16,867. West Bengal reported the highest number of cases at 3,067, followed by Kerala and Maharashtra. India also announced free COVID-19 vaccine booster shots to all adults in the age group of 18-59 from July 15. The decision was taken to celebrate 75 years of Indian independence and shots will be available for 75 days from July 15.
