Sandhya is a student of class XI in Ayodhya Das Girls. Inter College. Every morning, she hops on a boat near her home in Baharampur and makes her way to reach the swollen Rapti – the last half-submerged houses Raj GhatiFrom where she takes tempo to reach school.
“My school was closed for a long time due to the pandemic and now we are facing a challenge from Rapti. I do not want to miss further classes as I do not have the privilege of private tutoring. I completely depend on my school for my studies,” said the teenager. Sandhya believes that as determined as she is, it is not possible for her – and all the others living in the area – to recover from the miseries of monsoon floods year after year.
“I appeal to the chief minister to build an embankment in his area as flood waters have entered many houses and families are forced to live on roofs under plastic sheets,” she said.
Takes inspiration from personalities like Sandhya Sarojini NaiduIndira Gandhi, Kalpana Chawla and PT Usha said they felt deeply saddened by the challenges they had to face when many other students – especially girls – had to drop out of school.
“Many girls in my area are no longer going to school because of the floods, but I can’t afford to be scared. I aspire to work for Railways and I am working hard every day to achieve my goal. Once she gets a job and earns enough to meet her family’s needs, Sandhya wants to fly elsewhere with her family.
