Mangaluru: Death of a 17-year-old boy Girl in the village of Alankaru Kadab was suspected to be a case of taluk rabies by local people. However, health Department Officials have said that preliminary reports have found no evidence to support suspicion.
Vinci Susamma, a second PU student of Kadaba Government PU College, had died of severe headache, and locals suspected that she died of rabies, as the village had witnessed the death of some dogs due to the disease. Pets in Vinci’s household also died of rabies, but showed no symptoms.
Verghese’s daughter Vinci of Cadila was rushed to a hospital in Puttur on Thursday due to severe headache. He was later referred to Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru and died late on Thursday.
Since rabies was noticed in street dogs in Alankaru village a few months back, local residents assumed that the victim had rabies.
DHO Dr Kishore Kumar M told TOI that the patient’s history does not suggest rabies. “The girl’s parents have not confirmed a dog bite, although their pet dog and one of her puppy died six months ago. The family members, including the girl, were keeping the dogs, and hence rabies was suspected. However, they have not confirmed that the girl was bitten, and she also did not show any symptoms of rabies,” said Dr Kumar.
Generally, salivation and hydrophobia are the predominant symptoms in rabies patients. He said that he could not salivate, but was having trouble in drinking water. “It could be a case of cerebral haemorrhage. A team of doctors has visited the house, and they will submit a report after studying the case sheet,” he said.
