Germany is tightening travel restrictions for people arriving from Britain in response to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

The country’s national center for disease control, the Robert Koch Institute, added Britain to its list of virus isolated areas late on Saturday. This means anyone traveling from the UK to Germany would have to enter mandatory quarantine for 14 days, regardless of vaccination status.

The new restrictions, which will take effect from midnight on Sunday, come as the UK reports a record high number of new coronavirus infections. On Saturday, 90,418 new cases were reported in the country.

Britain has joined eight African countries, including South Africa, on Germany’s list of virus isolated regions.

The Robert Koch Institute’s announcement comes in the wake of tighter restrictions for other countries across Europe as the continent faces a fourth wave of infections.

From Sunday, France and Denmark are considered high-risk areas, meaning people who have not been vaccinated or have not recovered from the virus will have to quarantine for 10 days. Dozens of countries have now been added to this category, including almost all of Germany’s direct neighbors.
