General Bipin Rawat’s death news Live Updates: CDS’s last visit today; PM Modi, Rajnath Singh pay tribute

The residence for the last darshan of the general public on Friday from 11 am to 12:30 pm. The slot between 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm will be kept for the military personnel to pay respect to the outstanding commander and his wife. General Rawat’s last journey from his residence to the Berar Square crematorium is scheduled to begin around 2 pm. The funeral is scheduled for 4 pm. Brigadier Lidar’s last rites will be performed at 9 am. After the tribute ceremony, all the bodies were to be taken to the army hospital Dhaula Kuan.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, NSA Ajit Doval, Army Chief MM Naravane, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, Air Chief Marshal AVR Choudhary and Defense Secretary Ajay Kumar were among those who paid tributes at a condolence ceremony on Thursday.

“Payed my last respects to General Bipin Rawat, his wife and other personnel of the Armed Forces. India will never forget his rich contribution,” Modi tweeted. Heartbreaking scenes were witnessed at Palam airport as 13 coffins were lined up inside a hangar in the presence of their family members. The Prime Minister also contacted the next of kin of the deceased and spoke to them for a few minutes.

13 people were killed when their helicopter crashed in an air crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, triggering a wave of mourning across the country. Indian Air Force’s C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft carrying the bodies from Sulur airbase landed at Palam technical airport around 7:35 pm.

So far only three bodies out of 13 have been identified – General Rawat and his wife, Madhulika Rawat and Brigadier LS Lidar. Army officials said the bodies of those identified would be released to the families for the last rites. Till the other bodies are identified, they will be kept in the mortuary of Army Base Hospital.

Besides General Rawat, his wife and Brigadier Lidder, 10 other personnel killed in the accident are: Lt Col Harjinder Singh, Wing Commander PS Chauhan, Squadron Leader K Singh, JWO Das, JWO Pradeep A, Havildar Satpal, Naik Gursewak Singh, Naik Jitendra Kumar, Lance Naik Vivek Kumar and Lance Naik Sai Teja. The lone survivor, Group Captain Varun Singh, is currently undergoing treatment at a military hospital in Bengaluru.
