Gambhir was appointed as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team on July 9, 2024, after Rahul Dravid’s contract came to an end in June 2024.

Former Indian opening batter Gautam Gambhir, who succeeded Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team in July after his contract came to an end in June 2024, has revealed the reason behind accepting the role of head coach. According to the 42-year-old, he never even thought about the coaching role, even a few months ago, but then the opportunity to represent India motivated him to take the role.

“Never thought about it. Never thought about coaching India even a couple of months back. The reason I… obviously first is it’s an absolute honour to represent your country once again, coming back in the dressing room where you have spent a lot of time and you have done some special things, have some memories with all of you guys. You look forward… looking at the kind of tours we have got, Champions Trophy (in 2025), T20 World Cup (in 2026), and the 50-over World Cup (in 2027). So obviously sometimes you want to challenge yourself and keep pushing yourself forward, and that was one of the reasons why I thought that yes, I can contribute,” Gambhir told Virat Kohli in a special interview.
